4 Weeks Moving Guide

What should I do a month before moving?



There are a lot of things to do and remember before moving. It can be overwhelming, and if you do not write it all down beforehand, something is bound to get left behind. One of the best ways to ensure that you don’t forget anything is to create a checklist.


4 weeks before your move is the ideal time to start, as it allows you plenty of time to get things done, and you are less likely to forget anything.



4 weeks before moving day

  1. Start searching for a moving company. Get quotes and select a company whose rates and schedule work with your budget and timeline.

  2. Make the list of the items to be moved. This will be helpful when calling for quotes.

  3. Sort out the items for selling or donation.

  4. Send notice to your landlord.

  5. Start and finalize your new home address with completed paperwork.


3 weeks before moving day

  1. Finalize a moving company.

  2. Make arrangements for storage unit if necessary.

  3. Finalize rental of moving truck if you are moving long distance and only hiring local movers to load your items.

  4. Apply for change in vehicle or personal property insurance with new address and effective dates.

  5. Put in for vacation days or time off from work for packing and moving dates.

  6. Place an order or go to a moving supply store to buy boxes and moving materials.


2 weeks before moving day

  1. Update your memberships for the gym, club, health insurance, etc.

  2. Make sure all personal paperwork is organized and secure in one file or box. These items should remain with you on the day of the move in case of emergency.

  3. Start packing household items that are not frequently used in boxes and place in storage or garage area.

  4. Confirm any last details with moving company

  5. Dispose of any items you are not moving.

  6. Notify all service providers at the current location and update with new address all utility companies. Finalize payment of bills at current address and confirm start date of new services.

  7. Put in for change of address at post office.

  8. If possible, book a babysitter or childcare provider for moving day.


1 week before moving day

  1. Book a move-out cleaning service or do it yourself.

  2. Finalize packing.

  3. Disassemble the furniture not in use.

  4. Pack lights/lamps, kitchenware, etc.

  5. Make arrangements for trash removal.

  6. Clean up the refrigerator and dishwasher.


DAY OF MOVE: Early morning

  1. Uninstall or disassemble the appliances.

  2. Unplug lamps and cable boxes.

  3. Do a walk-through of entire home including cupboards to check for any items left behind.

  4. Take out cash from ATM.

  5. Get gas and simple snack food and water to have on hand for day.

  6. Get pets situated in crates.

  7. Decide what boxes are to be loaded in your personal vehicle. This should include all jewelry, documents and special items.

  8. Wait for movers to arrive.
